Hey all thought mine were something else but have found out they are both a very light aluminum. I realize the potential hazards, but I am leaving tomorrow. Is the track going to have an issue with them.?? Are there 'flag pole police" at Daytona

How true, I'll just run over to the Depot when I get there and pick up some pvc and do like John destef has. shounds like an easy fix.

Saw some guys from Dega do this the weekend the 2 guys got killed there, its a quick fix at best but does not beat the real thing.

If you go to Daytona, check out the flea market down the street there is a guy there that sells poles.

I remember a guy got killed at Dover a couple of years ago with an aluminum flag pole. The pole was attached to his trailer and was set up in the afternoon about 20 feet away from overhead power lines. It worked great until the humidity rose at night and there was a tremendous arc that went from the power lines, down his flag pole and eventually hit him from the ground up. It actually blew tires off a trailer parked two spots away and left a scorch mark on his propane tanks. I am always cautious near power lines and I use PVC flag poles now.

Wow, that I would never think of but it makes sense, thanks for sharing that.

Reminds me a photos taken in super slow motion of the arcing during a storm.

The power company tells us here (In Fire Dept. Training) high voltage wires, need to have at least 10 Feet. Any closer you are risking an arc from the Power to the Ladder. Also don’t let PVC fool you. If it comes into contact with High voltage lines, it can be just as bad. Especially if it has any age to it. Tires being rubber, makes no difference, between steel belting and high carbon content, the actually carry electricity quite well.

If you are going to stick anything in the air, look first, and always run a ground wire into the ground. If there is a storm with in 20 miles, take it down. A man was struck by lightning in Florida some years back. The storm the generated the bolt was 20 miles away.
Just remember to fly the NASCARcamping.com Flag Safely!!!

I saw the guy in "pirate alley" across the road from MIS selling flag poles. I think he was asking around 150 bucks. Not sure if they were AL or fiberglass.
