Talladega Superspeedway has permanently banned 14 fans from buying tickets at the speedway following their arrests Sunday for throwing objects on the track after Jeff Gordon’s victory in the Aaron’s 499.
The fans were charged with disorderly conduct Sunday and posted bond at the track’s jail facilities, Talladega County Sheriff Jerry Studdard said. Track officials can’t prevent the 14 fans from buying tickets through a third party.
A number of fans began throwing beer cans after Gordon won the race under caution, passing the late Dale Earnhardt — a Talladega favorite — in career wins.
Talladega officials had issued warnings before the race that fans caught throwing objects over the fence separating the grandstands from the track would be arrested.
Superspeedway president Grant Lynch said identifying other fans who threw objects was harder than he had imagined.
“At a baseball game where everybody is sitting down, it’s easy to see someone stand up and throw an object onto the field,” Lynch said. “I was looking at a section that probably had 300 people in it, and they were all standing up, waving their arms and their caps, and I couldn’t pinpoint where any of the objects were coming from.”
It is a start!!

Wow, this sounds like a 'first' of sorts, hopefully people will think twice in the future.

All of the Tracks need to Follow:
Las Vegas Motor Speedway to Ban Fans Who Threw Objects at Talladega
The spectators who are found guilty of throwing cans and other debris on Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway will not be welcome at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
LVMS general manager Chris Powell said Wednesday that fans banned from Talladega as a result of Sunday’s trash-throwing incident will not be allowed to purchase tickets at LVMS.
On Tuesday, Talladega Superspeedway president Grant Lynch announced that the fans who threw debris have received a lifetime ban from the facility. On Wednesday, Lynch encouraged other NASCAR tracks to follow suit.
“There is absolutely no place in our sport for that kind of behavior,” Powell said. “First and foremost, it is a safety issue. Secondly, it reflects poorly on our sport and the millions of great racing fans across the country to have a few people act the way these individuals did on Sunday.
“Grant and I have been friends for a long time, and I have a great deal of respect for what he is trying to do. I think we all have the best interest of our sport in mind in making this decision.”
Powell said the ban would be an indefinite one and would apply to all events at LVMS including drag racing, dirt racing and weekly racing events.

What would really be noteworthy is that if all sister tracks started to also duplicate this ban.....

I think that it is only in time that they will follow.

Seriously WHAT good is this going to do?? They can jump on eBay or have a friend buy them...it is a teflon penalty...it is going to slide right off, it is not like they check ID's at the tracks...
In gesture it is substantial...but in reality it is minimal at best. OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!!

Melissa - that was my first thought....exactly HOW would they even begin to police that. I agree that they need to do something...I've had a "heated" conversation with several Jr fans that sit around us at Talladega - it's getting OLD! I love to go to Talladega, but I'm just sick of dealing with the poor-sportsmanship fans. It's just become ridiculous. Last October I told them all that they needed to become 24 or 48 fans if they wanted to WHINE all the time!! I even offered to bring Kleenex to the next race for them all.

The fans were not the only ones misbehaving
NASCAR announced yesterday that Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 29 Chevrolet and Jamie McMurray, driver of the No. 26 Ford, have been fined $25,000 each and placed on probation until Oct. 3, 2007 for being involved in an altercation with each other’s cars during this past Sunday’s NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.
The altercation occurred during the final caution period that came on the white-flag lap.
Both drivers were found to be in violation of Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing – involved in an altercation with another competitor’s car during a caution period) of the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series rule book.

See that term "detrimental" to the sport in those kind of incidents is incorrect. It is THOSE kinds of incidents that give the sport the fire and emotion. I understand that they have to address those kinds of situation, as they can get out of control and ultimately cause tragedy if unaddressed, however the "detrimental" actions are usually the ones that end up on the highlight reels for years to come (i.e. Allison/Yarbrough, Robby Gordon/Waltrip, Kurt Busch/Jimmy Spencer)...
If they didn't act detrimental from time to time...it would just be guys going in circles...Just my opinion... :P

Since Bruton Smith owns several tracks throughout the Country, as well as Las Vegas Motor Speedway, I think that all of those sister tracks will follow suit.

My Question is in the same line as Melissa's.
How are they going to Stop these people that they have banned from getting there Tickets from EBay or having someone else buy them for them? They have an Good Ideal but this will not Stop them from getting back in. So the only way they will catch them again is if they arrest them again and what are the chances for that to happen.

True, but maybe these peoples do not know how to operate one let alone own one
Actions speak louder than words, this was maybe done to fulfill an obligation to everyone to " show" that they are doing something.
The only place I can see this effecting someone, is if they " own" if you will a lot of high end spots and seats like I do, if I for one lost my seats to behaviour like this, there is no way I could buy thewm on e-bay, as they simply dont exists all the times there.
And on that, some of the biggest problems I have seen is not always with the people you expect to be the trouble makers.

You could be right there. But, if I was one of those people and I wonted to go to Dega again. I would find a ticket somewhere. They are selling on almost every road going into the track, every beer stop, every gas stop, and anyplace else they can find to put up a tent around that race track.

I have pondered this alot...seriously HOW can they ban them other than not letting them call in for tickets...a wife or friend, whomever can still purchase for them. Are they going to put people beside the gates with instructions to be on the look out for Big Guy, Dale Jr. Shirt, Ball cap and cooler of Coor's Light...yeah...THAT will work, that narrows it down to about one in every three fans through the gates. Perhaps they should install cornea screeners at the gates...or require two forms of ID (again, my sarcasm)...My point is...it will NEVER be a punishment, other than it will disable them from picking up the phone and calling and using their real name to order tickets.
I admire the attempt to try to put a stop to this foolish act. But keep in mind this happened last year at Chicagoland after Gordon won there too...it is an idiotic practice adopted by a select few. I think after they arrested them, their punishment should have been to have to clean the entire grandstands...or some kind of community service.
Sorry I am on my soapbox about this...this has been a sore subject with me since the Chicago race last year (note it is in my eBay guide) and I can't imagine that these people who resort to this kind of display can actually call themselves race fans. Want to punish them...make them wear Derrick Cope shirts to the next race...ha!!
Again...just my opinion...http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u138/bigolepig/pig.gif

HA, love the pic Shirley!! They could clean that "dump station" that was mentioned on one of the other boards...Seriously!! It just infuriates me to think that these idiots could ruin it for the rest of us. Can you imagine IF you can't take in a cooler?? That would be fining the rest of the fans...
Ughhhh...I am just in one of those moods...a sore subject makes for a cranky pig...
