Well with the economy in such a bust, we are going to have to start to look for sponsorship money outside of our local area. Our sons have been racing Soapbox Derby for about 8 years now, and we started off with one car for my oldest son in the stock division, then my youngest son started racing in the stock division and my oldest moved onto super stock division. We run rally races all over the state of Maine, New Hampshire, and as far as Vermont if possible. We have opportunities to run more races further away, but we are doing it more as a family fun and bonding thing than purely for points. We run for trophies usually at every race in the top eight. My oldest son won the sportsmanship award for the state of Maine out of over 1000 racers, which is worth more than any trophy or win we could have ever imagined. Well it costs us on an average about $500 per weekend to race at a two day event with fuel, travel, and entry costs, along with upgrades to the cars and such. For the last 5 years we have been able to put together about $4000.00 in local businesses as well as a few out of state businesses that we have relationships with. Well this year I am going to be lucky to put together half of that and will have to cut back on where we run and how often. We always run the big local event and are right there in the top 3 usually every year, just waiting on the big win and trip to Akron to race in the National. We're looking at moving on to karting in the next couple years and still running the big local event with the soapbox derby cars, and then passing them down to my 3 nieces and my nephew so they can get something going.
I need to raise about $2000 to put forth a decent race schedule for the boys for the Summer, and I'll be on the road with MRO part of the time, so I really have a lot of work to do to get everything together so they'll have a good showing. If any of you know of any businesses or individuals that would be interested in helping out a small family race team support their kids racing opportunities please PM me or post up here to let me know. I spend a ton of time on the computer every week chasing down donations and sponsorship money for MRO and Morgan Shepherd, but I guess I'll have to start working on my own deal too on a larger scale.
