Witnesses said Kalitta was speeding at an estimated 300 mph during the National Hot Rod Association Super Nationals when the engine of his Toyota Solara exploded in a ball of flames.

"The driver was killed after he lost control of his vehicle," said Sgt. Julian Castellanos, a spokesman for the State Police.

Lynette Davis, a spokeswoman for Raritan Bay Medical Center in Old Bridge confirmed that Kalitta was brought to the hospital at 4:56 p.m., but she would not release further details pending the notification of family members.

Spectators at the track watched as Kalitta's car exploded, hit a sand trap, then vaulted over a protective catch fence. A slow-moving ambulance took the driver away.

Kalitta, 46, of Palmetto, Fla., was a two-time Top Fuel champion (1994-95) had 18 career victories, 17 of them in the Top Fuel class.

I know this track well. They have a great safety record. I have not had a chance to see the footage or hear exactly what happened.

My prayers are with the family and crew.

A very sad day to say the least. Scott owned a Marina here in St Pete (South Pasadena) for a few years during one of his "retirements" from drag racing. I met him quite a few times there and he was a great guy, with a wonderful wife and kids. I am so terribly sad for his family.

The speeds that funny car and top fuel are running are unbelieavble anymore. Keep in mind the runnoff areas at most drag strips haven't, in my opinion, kept up with the speeds these guys and girls are now running. I certainly feel that all Dragstrips need to look at increasing the runnoff areas for sure for safety's sake, and you certainly shouldn't have a brick/concrete wall at the end.

In talking to some folks associated with the NHRA, it sounds more like when the engine blew apart, that perhaps Scott was severly, or even mortally wounded by the debris. From the footage it looks like one of the heads on the motor completely dissintegrated. Scott never even made an attempt to pull the manual deployment mechanism on the chute. Was a horrifying crash we were watching something else and I just happened to turn it over to the NHRA as they showed a replay. Definately a huge loss for that whole community. Thoughts and prayers go out to Scott's family and friends.

I saw a replay of the crash too. Just such a catastrophic event that it didn't look like there was a point where he ever would have survived it.

Prayers for the Kalitta family and all of the NHRA circuit. Unfortunately this is back to back losses for them the way that the NASCAR series had a few years ago.

With all due respect we all know there is what will be said "officially" and what really happened when any sactioning body is concerned. At the end of the day everyone, myself included, can surmise all we want regarding what did and didn't happen, if chute deployed or not and who did or didn't do it, and even at what point he passed, but at the end of the day only 2 people know what really happened and that would be Scott and the Lord. I consider myself lucky to have known Scott on a personal basis. And can only hope that my prayers will somehow help his family going forward.
