Some tracks sell pre-race pit passes. Other than that you either need to know someone on a team, or sponsors also usually get some pit passes depending on level of sponsorship. There are two types of pit/garage passes for Sprint Cup, Hot and Cold. Some tracks have hot and cold passes for Nationwide and trucks as well. Hot passes are good at all times while pit and garage area is open. Cold passes are only good for when there is no on track activity (cold period) and usually a half hour before they go hot until a half hour after on track activity.

If you ever get the chance, it's one of the greatest opportunities in a race fan's life! And yes no shorts, no sleeveless shirts, and closed toe shoes only! Also you will need your driver's license too, they check that against the name on the passes at most of the tracks now.

You know BigBlock...people like that ought to have the chains busted out on them and drag them behind your RV. If that don't work, I have found a virtual kick in the butt does nicely as well!! :p
