On this brink of the 2008 NASCAR championship weekend let's take a look back at the very first NASCAR champ...It was Red Byron in 1948, the first NASCAR-sanctioned race was on Feb. 15, 1948 on Daytona Beach - yes, on the beach. A crowd of 14,000 paid $2.50 each to watch the race that saw 62 cars enter - and 50 start! Byron was driving a '39 Ford in the race and his season winnings totalled $5,800...

What a way this series has come. I was lucky enough to be at a couple of the last Beach Races, 57 and last in 58. Of course I was only 6 and 7 at the time so don't remember alot. My Mom was a big race fan so I was off to tracks at very young ages. Its been an amazing transformation to see
