Will be interesting to see where this ends up

CONCORD, N.C. -- After months of firmly backing Dale Earnhardt Jr (http://www.nascar.com/drivers/dps/dearnhar01/cup/index.html).'s crew chief, car owner Rick Hendrick (http://www.nascar.com/drivers/dps/rhendric01/cup/index.html) was noncommittal about Tony Eury Jr.'s future Tuesday.
Although Hendrick said no personnel changes have been made on Earnhardt's No. 88 Chevrolet, he declined to give Eury a vote of confidence a day after NASCAR's most popular driver was 40th in the Coca-Cola 600, his worst finish of the season.
Hendrick left open the possibility that Earnhardt could have a new crew chief this weekend in Dover, Del.
"Could it change?" Hendrick said following the sport's town hall meeting. "We're talking about things. We're meeting. We're going to make decisions as the days go by. But we haven't made any decision as of right now."
Earnhardt ran near the back of the pack Monday and was two laps down in the rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600, his worst showing since last season's finale in Homestead, Fla.
Earnhardt wasn't involved in a wreck and didn't have mechanical problems at Lowe's Motor Speedway (http://www.nascar.com/races/tracks/lms). His car handled poorly all afternoon.
When the race was over, Earnhardt was left with his third consecutive finish outside the top 25. He's also been 20th or worse five times in the last six Sprint Cup events.
"We just missed a setup," Hendrick said. "I can't explain why because basically we're the same, all four cars. They all fought a lot of the same problems early on. Probably as a group, we were off. We've been better at Charlotte than we were [Monday]. I was disappointed; our teams were disappointed. We've got to go back and look at what we did.
"We just never could get [Earnhardt's] car adjusted back."
His teammates did.
Jimmie Johnson (http://www.nascar.com/drivers/dps/jjohnson00/cup/index.html) ran up front all day, but wound up 13th because of the final red-flag situation. Jeff Gordon (http://www.nascar.com/drivers/dps/jgordon00/cup/index.html) finished 14th in what he called a "horrendous" car, and Mark Martin (http://www.nascar.com/drivers/dps/mmartin00/cup/index.html) was three spots back after falling way behind because of a pit-road violation.
Earnhardt, who was testing on the road course at Virginia International Raceway on Tuesday and unavailable for comment, was way back all day. He's been in that position often in the last 11 months.
Earnhardt joined Hendrick before the 2008 season in what was arguably the biggest free-agent move in NASCAR history, and many believed getting the sport's most popular driver in the sport's best equipment would land Junior in Victory Lane early and often.
It hasn't happened.
He won once last season, at Michigan in June, but has been mostly mediocre in the 33 races since. He's finished outside the top 20 a telling 14 times during that stretch.
Some believe the problems have started to get in Earnhardt's head. Hendrick has said he was looking for new ways to get the team turned around. He said there had been several meetings and tons of information sharing with his other teams in hopes of finding some solutions.
But he's strongly backed Eury the whole way, insisting that Earnhardt's cousin and longtime crew chief is the right man for the job.
Until now.
Hendrick was asked specifically if Eury would be atop the pit box at Dover, but for the first time, did not give a firm confirmation.
"We're always concerned when we have a car that doesn't run well," Hendrick said. "We're always meeting and trying to figure what to do and how to make it better. That's just an ongoing situation. We've got to come up with a plan and we've got to work toward it."

Up until the past 3 races, I would have whole heartedly disagreed with making a change. They hadn't run great this year, but they were less than 10 races into the year, and still within striking distance of the top 12. Last year the same driver/crew chief/team ran toward the front more often than not and lead plenty of laps.

Bad luck is one thing, but Richmond, Darlington, and Charlotte have been disappointing to say the least. They are just plain and simple not running worth a darn.

I'm not real big on advocating change, unless there is a better solution available. And I don't know who they could get to come into the situation and have a positive impact. Jr had success with Eury Sr, but Pops has said on more than 1 occasion than he isn't interested in the job.

It's not all Eury's fault. Jr has made his fill of bad calls, jeeze he can't even find the pit box. I think he just struggles driving the COT period. Nothing against JR, I like the guy, but he just ain't daddy. I think the shine is wearing off. Rick Hendrick saw the $$ in merchandising and the like, made a big mistake in dropping Kyle Busch, but who was to know Kyle would excell in the COT. But, it's just like hockey, don't fire the players, fire the coach.

somebody has to go! jeez, you can't miss your pit every race and NOT make a change. I don't know whose fault it is, and really could care less. The more I get to know about JR the more I dislike him!

You know I am a Dale Jr fan but something just isn't right, at first I thought it might be that Jeff and Jimmy were getting the good stuff and the 5 and 25 (now 88) were just the "step children" But Mark is in the Chase and has 3 Poles and 1 or 2 wins. SO, I'm ready for Tony Jr to step down and run the Nationwide teams and get the Car Chef from both the 24 and 48 teams to run the 88's show. Dale Jr needs to run every Truck and Nationwide race from now to the end of the season and get some communication with the new crew and car chefs.
Teresa may have been on the right track when she told him to settle down and be a race car driver.

I agree...but I think when his Uncle was the Crew Cheif there was more discipline and more respect both ways...now and for the last several seasons I think they are going through the motions. I defected from Jr. Nation when he switched to Hendrick...

Dale Earnhardt Jr. getting new crew chief

Source: Charlotte Observer (http://www.thatsracin.com/140/story/10408.html)
Tony Eury Jr., who has worked with driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. as crew chief or car chief since his Sprint Cup Series debut in 2000, is no longer working atop the driver's pit box.
Hendrick Motorsports announced Thursday morning that Lance McGrew has been named interim crew chief of the No. 88 beginning with next weekend's race at Pocono. This weekend at Dover, Del., team manager Brian Whitesell will lead the team.
"Our performance hasn't been where it should be," said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. "It's impossible to pin that on any one factor, but a change is the right decision at this point. We have a plan in place, and we're going to move forward with it."
Whitesell and Rex Stump, Hendrick Motorsports' lead chassis engineer, have been assigned to support McGrew. Whitesell, who won two of seven races as Jeff Gordon's interim crew chief in 1999, will join McGrew and team engineer Tom Stewart on the No. 88 pit box to assist with race strategy.
"We're going to put our full resources toward improving the situation and winning races," Hendrick said. "It's going to be a collective effort that includes all of our drivers, all of our crew chiefs and all of our engineers. Everyone in our company will be involved on some level."
Eury Jr. will move from the crew chief position into a key role with Hendrick Motorsports' research and development group.
Since joining Hendrick at the beginning of last season, Earnhardt has one win, 11 top-five and 19 top-10 finishes and one pole in 48 starts.
He qualified and finished 12th in the Chase for the Sprint Cup last season but so far is 19th in points after 12 of the 26 races used to qualify. Earnhardt finished 40th in Monday's rain-shortened and rain-delayed Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway without any mechanical problems or being in any accidents.
On Tuesday, team owner Rick Hendrick said no personnel changes had been made on Earnhardt's team but he left open the possibility that Earnhardt could have a new crew chief this weekend in Dover, Del.
"I have mixed feelings, and that's just natural," Eury Jr. said. "But I enjoy working at Hendrick Motorsports, and this is where I want to be. I'll do whatever I can to help all of our teams and try to be a part of another championship. I think a new challenge will be good."
McGrew, 41, won the 2003 Nationwide Series championship with driver Brian Vickers. He won the October 2006 Sprint Cup race with Vickers at Talladega, Ala., and most recently led Cup rookie Brad Keselowski to a seventh-place finish May 9 at Darlington, S.C.
A native of Baton Rouge, La., McGrew has experience working with Earnhardt. Last season, the pair ran three Nationwide races, posting top-10 finishes April 5 at Texas Motor Speedway and May 24 at Lowe's Motor Speedway. They also finished 15th on March 8 at Atlanta.
