There was talk at the Glen if road racing should be a part of NASCAR and all the drivers said yes. However with this points system, races outside the chase don't mean as much so if a driver can't drive a road race it really doesn't matter. Each race should be equal is importance. A champion should be able to have their best races at any time during the entire year. Not just the last 10 and not just at certain race tracks.
As a Jimmie Johnson fan, my ideal chase would be at these 10 tracks.
Las Vegas
Charlotte - Chase race
Martinsville - Chase race
Darlington
Fontana
Atlanta - Chase race
Pocono
Loudon - Chase race
Dover - Chase race
Phoenix - Chase race
I would not want these 10 race tracks.
Indianapolis
Sonoma
Richmond
Talladega - Chase race
Bristol
Michigan
Homestead - Chase race (last race)
Watkins Glen
Kansas - Chase race
Daytona
Either way, the more tracks in the last 10 that your driver doesn't do well with, the lesser his chase of winning a championship. NASCAR is not like football or basketball where is playing surface is basically the same everytime. We need a points system that allows for all driving styles and abilities, NOT who is best at the last 10 tracks.

I like the chase format. It makes the last 10 races mean something. The points leader cant just ride now. He has to get all that he can get.

But they do just ride around.
Its like Jeff said last year, "I just have to finish an average of 8th or better...that is what Tony did last year to win the Championship..." So the last 10 races are pointless...nobody RACES...they ride in circles trying not to get wrecked out or wreck themselves out. They don't race for a win or race in general. They just ride around hoping for a good finish.http://www.lunarsoft.net/forum/style_emoticons/default/frustrated.gif

It's true. All because 1 bad race hurts more than 1 good race helps, especially now with 11 guys to pace with. If you have 1 DNF, unless every driver in the chase has 1 also, even if you finish in the top 10 the other 9 races, all one guy has to do is finish every race in the top 15 or so to win. Look at Jimmie Johnson this season. 4 wins in the first 12 races but 4 DNF's as well. A few weeks ago he was at risk to miss the chase  In this modern NASCAR points system winning isn't rewarded. That is why they keep tweaking the chase to try to get that winning attitude back. It will never come back with this points system. Maybe if the team with the most wins at the end of the season was rewarded with a type of championship as well.

Your right about finishing 8th. But I dont think you can ride around and finish 8th. It does take some talent and a good car to finsh in the top 10 every week. The chase format is alot better than watching Jeff ride around with a huge lead and have nothing to loose at all. And now more than one driver has a shot to win or loose it all. Until they change the points system again and make winning a better option than finishing 8. This is the best we have. And i think its better than the old system. But we all could watch bowling instead.

Jeff Gordon said on tv that He would like to win everyrace, but he wasn't going to kill himself or the car because he was locked in to the chase a few weeks ago..... So I don't need to watch until the chase starts, and even then it takes a lot more work to finish 1s than it does 8th. The sport is no fun to watch if they are not all raceing hard.
Also Like someone ells also keeps saying, Jeff Gordon was robbed of a championship because of the way this point system is set up. Football has the superbowl, baseball has the Sieries, NASCAR does not have to follow suit. It will be intresting to see what kind of rateings ABC gets with the chase.....
I need to get MRN in my house so I can mute the TV durring the Race....
