Being a newbie, am making a list (and checking it twice) of things I need to bring to Daytona next year, besides the rv. Mainly asking for what kind of extra things do you all bring to make your outside functional and fun. Got the usual, chairs, table, a grill but what else? I know the rv has an outside light but do I need coleman lanturns for outside at nite, or do tiki torches put off enought light (might be dangerious), Any and all suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
Gail

You should bring tailgaiting games like corn hole or ladder golf. Maybe a radio or mp3 player (Ipod 8) ). :D

If you have the RV - IMO you won't need tikki torches or Coleman lanterns. The RV will have handy little lights that are perfect! :D

I'd suggest getting a couple of GOOD coolers if you are planning on icing down beverages of any kind. Ice is a premium at the track.

I'd also say find something to decorate the campsite with your driver - when you get to the track and see everyone else flying the colors its REALLY addictive! If you go as far as lights - remember extension cords.

Don't know about Daytona - but I would also suggest getting some kind of mat for setting up outside on - it keeps things from sinking in dirt, and helps with dirt.

If I can think of anything else, I'll come back!!

A tip to help keep the ice longer, use blocks of dry ice (about 3" thick) on the bottom of the cooler. Then place a layer of regular ice (home-made works best as it has a better density to it) about 3-4" on top of the dry ice to completely cover it. Do NOT stick your food or beverage directly ontop of the dry ice or it WILL completely freeze it (the beverage will probably explode, as we noticed some of our cans bulged out and the drink was solid ice ).

The cooler that had our food in it lasted for 5 days in temps of about 105 each day when we were at the last August Bristol race. There was still ice in the cooler when we got home. The beverage cooler didn't fare as well because we got into it a lot more often, kept restocking it with warm beverages, and took some of the regular ice out to put in the dog's water. It did last through Saturday day and the water was still cold after the race that night, so the beverages in it were still cool. (speaking of that...another tip, if you dont want to use dry ice, put some salt in your cooler when the ice starts to melt and keep some water in it when you refill with ice. Salty ice water keeps beverages cooler longer, and will cool beverages faster....under 5 minutes as proven by Mythbusters on the Discovery channel 8))

A word to the wise....if you pack ice in around your food, the food on the bottom will freeze and chances are some on the top will too

Also, if you do pack ice around your food or beverage with dry ice in the bottom, you WILL need a mallet or hammer to break your stuff free from the ice. Our neighbors were cracking up watching us get a soda from the cooler, but at the end of the week, we had the last laugh, as we didn't buy a single bag of ice at the track and they bought between 15-20 bags.

A final word of advice, never put the dry ice on top of the ice in the top of the cooler, as it will freeze everything solid.

JELLO SHOTS; J.J. had the right idea with a game like the washer game is always good. Also one thing with the coolers, We have one the has a small door on the top so you don't have to open the whole things to get to the beverages. Most nights that's my main seat on top of the cooler operations that tap door.

Ok joking aside.
Pick up a couple of those cheap blue tarps at Sams'club, or your favorite store. Some good clothesline, not the plastic stuff. Weather will always surprise you. :o
If you are going to run electric lights, Make sure you generator is running good. I would bring a Gas lantern just as a back up. Even if you are runnig RV Lights, you will need to charge the Batteries...
About the coolers, the other thing you can do even with the high end coolers is wrap them in a light colored blanket, it ads to the insulation, blocks direct sunlight and helps keep the ice longer. I have one big cooler that I put the layer of dry ice in, and then nothing but bagged ice. When the beverage cooler needs ice I just add a bag from there. Don't try to use the dry ice for mixed beverages. it makes allot of "Smoke", and the dry ice sticks to your lips
Most importantly, lots of booze absorbing food! :P

I've been looking at mats on line at ebay 9x16 going for about $69.00 whats the diff in getting an RV mat, instead of just getting a tarp to put down, or a big piece of indoor outdoor carpet? I live in FL so I have many tarps in my Hurricane kit

In out carpet works great. The mats are just more "Fasionable". You can get mats that are race oriented, or match your decore. I just use in/out carpet. A tarp will not catch as much dirt and mud and does not support the legs of tables and chairs as much.

Hurricane kit, Hmmmm, I'm in NJ, I had one of those once, but we never seem to get the storm......
I shouldn't have said that.....

Working generators are a good thing

About the mat vs tarp. We had a tarp to begin with but it was harder to keep in place and didn't really help with dirt etc, plus just didn't really last that long (but is cheap!) . (IMO) The in/out carpet stays too wet and is harder to pack away because of size.

We invested in a checkered mat and have really got our use out of it. We've used it for the past 2 years every time we camp and it still looks almost new.

I agree with the RV mat. Alot easier to clean, maintain, fold and store. Look around on the net and you will find lots of options ....it's where we got ours........

I also agree about the RV mat. I have been using mine for 2 yrs camping thru all kinds of weather. The inout carpet will cost you only about $20.00, but if it rains you might as well throw it away. The RV mat will let water and dirt run thru it so will last longer. Pet supply web pages are a good place to fine them http://dog-training.com/groundmat.htm has good prices.

Hope you have lots of fun at the race.
